Assistant Professor-Data Driven Design (DDD)-UC Berkeley

The DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, University of California, Berkeley, seeks candidates for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. The Department seeks candidates with expertise in the broad area of Data-Driven Engineering Design, representing the fusion of mechanical engineering design with cutting-edge data science techniques such as artificial intelligence and machine learning.

The themes of interest should be interpreted broadly and include such topics as: data science applied to optimization in design and manufacturing; design using human-AI interaction across the engineering design process; and AI and ML approaches for design and system science.

We anticipate that candidates in Data-Driven Engineering Design may also support the Department’s commitment to fostering interdisciplinary research to address societal grand challenges, and candidates are encouraged to highlight any connections between their research interests and grand challenges such as: sustainable energy, water, and mobility; engineering for human health; autonomous and intelligent mechanical systems; and aerospace engineering.

UC Berkeley is a fertile environment for engineering research blending computational and data-driven techniques with design, including such strengths as the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation and the recently inaugurated Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society.

In addition to developing a vibrant, cutting-edge research program, the successful candidate will be expected to teach and develop undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in design and/or related areas. Courses of particular relevance include the Department’s introductory and capstone design classes, as well as courses with a data science component.

The Department is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia.
