Assistant Professor-Mechanical Engineering – UC Berkeley

The DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, University of California, Berkeley, seeks candidates for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. Outstanding candidates in all areas of mechanical engineering are encouraged to apply. The Department has identified critical needs in the broad area of Sustainable Energy Science and Technologies as a top priority, and seeks research and scholarship which will help advance solutions to the grand challenge of global climate change. Examples of related research expertise include:
● Thermal energy science and technology
● Nanoengineering and/or nanomaterials
● AI-enhanced, adaptive/autonomous energy science and technology
● Sustainable manufacturing
● Sustainable, energy efficient, and/or low carbon transportation by air, land, and sea

We anticipate that candidates may also support the Department’s commitment to fostering interdisciplinary research to address societal grand challenges, and candidates are encouraged to highlight any connections between their research vision and such grand challenges as: sustainable energy, water, and mobility; engineering for human health; autonomous and intelligent mechanical and energy systems; and aerospace engineering.

UC Berkeley is a fertile environment for research in sustainable energy science and technology, with many potential opportunities to connect and collaborate with related entities such as the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), the Designated Emphasis in Energy Science and Technology (DEEST), the Energy and Resources Group (ERG), and the recently inaugurated Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS), as well as in the greater Bay Area including Sandia and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories (SNL, LLNL), the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), and local high-tech companies of all sizes. In addition to developing a vibrant, cutting-edge research program, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach and develop undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in the fundamental thermal sciences, energy conversion principles, and advanced sustainable energy technologies.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Berkeley campus value diversity, equity and inclusion as exemplified by the following principles of community:

• We recognize the intrinsic relationship between diversity and excellence in all our endeavors.
• We embrace open and equitable access to opportunities for learning and development as our obligation and goal.

Our excellence can only be fully realized by faculty, students and staff who share a commitment to these principles. Successful candidates for our faculty position will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to equity and inclusion in higher education through their teaching, research and service activities.

The Department is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia.
