Optica Women Scholarship

The Optica Women Scholars empowers the next generation of women leaders in optics and photonics. Twenty scholars are selected annually at undergraduate and graduate levels. The prize consists of a US $10,000 grant, a one-year Optica Student Membership, and access to a global network of mentors and supporting companies, as well as a connection with an individual mentor.

DOE’s Office of Science is Now Accepting Applications for Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Awards

The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science is pleased to announce that the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is now accepting applications for the 2022 Solicitation 1 cycle. Applications are due 5:00pm Eastern Time on Wednesday, May 4, 2022: Click here to apply.

The SCGSR program supports awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to conduct part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE national laboratory or host site in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist — with the goal of preparing graduate students for scientific and technical careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission.

Smart Connected Aviation Student Competition

The 2022 FAA Challenge focuses on Smart Connected Aviation, providing undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to design, build, and test smart technology that has the ability to improve travelers’ transportation experiences and the efficiency of the national aviation ecosystem.

Through the Smart Connected Aviation Student Competition, FAA seeks innovative ideas from the academic community that take advantage of a future info-centric National Airspace System (NAS), including connected aircraft, that will benefit NAS users in the following four categories:

Commercial Air Transportation
General Aviation
Emerging Operations
Traveling Public

Interested teams and their faculty advisors are invited to submit a non-binding Expression of Interest (EOI) by 11:59 PM ET on Friday, October 15, 2021.

Teams who submit an EOI by the deadline will be invited to a Q&A Session with the FAA Challenge Steering Committee and Challenge Program Team.

Participating student teams will compete by submitting a Project Plan Proposal in January 2022. Finalist teams will be selected in February and receive a travel reimbursement up to $6,000 to offset the cost of traveling to the FAA’s William J. Hughes Technical Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey in June 2022 to demonstrate their concepts.

A Finalist team will be selected for each Category.
Four Finalist teams will receive a $10,000 cash prize and will be invited to compete for an additional $15,000 Best Overall prize at the 2022 FAA Challenge Forum!

LMI Graduate Fellowship Program

The LMI Graduate Fellowship program is a year-long professional development opportunity for outstanding new master’s degree graduates to develop analytic and consulting skills in support of the federal government. The Graduate Fellows participate in the program as a full-time LMI employee for one year, beginning the summer after they earn their master’s degree. 2022 Alvarez Fellowship and Hopper Fellowship

Berkeley Lab is now accepting applications for the 2022 Luis W. Alvarez Postdoctoral Fellowship and the 2022 Admiral Grace Hopper Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Computing Sciences Area.

Apply now for these two prestigious fellowships!  Researchers in computer science, mathematics, or any computational science discipline who have received their Ph.D. within the last three years (i.e., no earlier than January 1, 2019) are encouraged to apply. The successful applicants will receive a competitive salary, professional travel allowance, relocation assistance, excellent benefits, and an opportunity to work in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Since its founding in 2002, the Luis W.  Alvarez Fellowship has cultivated exceptional young scientists who have gone on to make outstanding contributions to computational and computing sciences.  The Admiral Grace Hopper Fellowship was established in 2015.

Berkeley Lab’s Computing Sciences Area researches, develops, and deploys new tools and technologies to meet these needs and to advance research in our core capabilities of computer science, mathematics, and computational science. In addition to fundamental advances in our core capabilities, we impact such areas as materials science, chemistry, biology, astrophysics, climate change, combustion, and fusion energy. Research areas in Computing Sciences include but are not limited to: developing scientific applications and software technologies for extreme-scale and energy-efficient computing; developing mathematical modeling for complex scientific problems; designing algorithms to improve the performance of scientific applications; researching digital and post-digital computer architectures for science; advancing extreme-scale scientific data management, analysis, and machine-learning; developing next-generation machine learning and AI approaches for science; advancing quantum computing technologies, software, algorithms and applications; evaluating or developing new and promising HPC systems and networking technologies researching methods to control and manage dynamic circuit networks; developing large-scale visualization and analytics technologies; and managing scientific data in distributed environments

Application open for UMD Global STEWARDS NSF NRT Fellowship, 2022 Cohort

We are now accepting applications for the UMD Global STEWARDS (STEM Training at the Nexus of Energy, WAter Reuse, and FooD Systems) graduate training fellowship, funded by the National Science Foundation Research Traineeship (NRT) program.

Applications are due by October 15th, 2021, and the cohort will begin in January 2022. Applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted into a PhD program at the University of Maryland College Park.

Approximately 12 Global STEWARDS will be accepted to the 2022 cohort. We will have funding from NSF to offer one-year stipends ($34,000) to approximately 6 of the 12 accepted students, along with tuition support and health benefits. Funding decisions are based on the strength of accepted students’ application materials.

To be eligible for an NSF stipend, an applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. However, we encourage students to apply for the Global STEWARDS program even if they are not eligible to receive an NSF stipend because these individuals will still be able to participate in all NRT program elements. In addition, all 12 accepted Global STEWARDS Fellows, regardless of whether they receive the NSF stipend or not, will receive $1,500 to support conference travel, workshops and publications.

SMART Scholarship Program

The SMART Scholarship is a program that allows students (undergraduate and graduate) to partner with various DoD facilities across the U.S. to conduct research with government employees.

Responsibilities

The Engineering Laboratory (EL) promotes U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology for engineered systems in ways that enhance economic security and improve quality of life.

You will support engineers in the development of robot testing protocols and data collection and analysis for monitoring diagnostic, and prognostic techniques in the robotics. In addition, you will support engineers in the prototyping of mechanical components to enable verification and validation of monitoring, diagnostic and prognostic techniques.

  • Males born after December 31, 1959 must be registered for Selective Service
  • Suitable for Federal employment
  • You must be at least 16 years of age
  • Must be enrolled at least half time at a qualifying institution
  • Must possess a grade point average (GPA) of a 3.0 or higher out of a 4.0

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
Completion of one full academic year of graduate level education OR eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor’s degree.

In addition, all applicants must be currently pursuing a degree in Engineering. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics
