Postdoctoral Scholar at Penn State University

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Penn State University is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Engineering Design Optimization Group lab under the direction of Dr. Mary Frecker.

Job Duties:

-Conduct research in optimal design of adaptive structures and disseminate the results
-Assist in supervising and mentoring the graduate and undergraduate students working with Dr. Frecker
-Assist in developing and writing external grant proposals
-Assist in reviewing and providing constructive feedback on lab members’ papers, oral presentations, and related work
-Participate in research meetings and events, and fill in for Dr. Frecker as needed
-Assist in overall organization and management of the lab

Qualifications and Requirements:

-Ph.D. as of the hire date in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
-Demonstrate success in carrying out independent research and dissemination of results
-Excellent organizational skills needed for involvement in multiple projects
-Excellent written/oral communication skills needed for active student mentoring and interaction with collaborators at Penn State and other universities
-Experience in effective student mentoring
-Dedication in ensuring a respectful, equitable and inclusive work environment
-Experience with finite element analysis, design optimization preferred
-Leadership experience preferred
-Experience in writing grant proposals preferred

Position 1: Fluid Mechanics (Assistant Professor) with an emphasis on physics-based machine learning model development or high-fidelity computational techniques, with an emphasis on applications such as renewable energy, aerospace, and/or biological flows. The School of Engineering at Fairfield University (www.Fairfield.edu/engineering) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant or associate professor position in Mechanical Engineering with a start date of Fall 2023.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is ABET accredited and offers Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees with major in Mechanical Engineering. In addition, students have an option to obtain a Concentration in either Automation, Robotics, and Manufacturing or Aerospace Engineering. The department is equipped with state of the art laboratories such as Material Characterization Lab, Automation, Robotics and Manufacturing (A.R.M.) Lab, Mechanical Engineering Lab, Machine Shop Lab and Innovation Annex in support of teaching and research and has one of the highest enrollment within the School of Engineering.

Required Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (attained by August 1st, 2023)
Effective English communication skills (verbal and written)
Ability to teach effectively both undergraduate and graduate courses
Demonstrated potential to prepare proposals and conduct funded research in the relevant field
