Research on safety and resilience assessment for nuclear power plants, complex systems and critical infrastructures, emphasizing the human factor and probabilistic analysis.

Your profile

  • PhD degree in nuclear, mechanical, other engineering discipline or in human factors / ergonomics
  • Experience in probabilistic safety/quantitative risk assessment; knowledge of nuclear power plant systems; familiarity with complex system operations would be advantageous
  • Enthusiastic and creative scientist interested in interdisciplinary research
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken)

Faculty position in Environmental & Ecological Engineering at Purdue University

Job Summary

Environmental and Ecological Engineering (EEE) at Purdue University invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Purdue University seeks to attract exceptional candidates with interests and expertise in Sustainable Industrial Systems. Specific topics of interest include electrification of processes, decarbonization, recycling/remanufacturing, circular economy, sustainable manufacturing, hydrogen economy, green design, and sustainable materials. Applications from individuals with expertise in solid/hazardous waste, air quality, and water are also welcome if their research focuses on these issues relative to industrial systems. Successful candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree in engineering or a related discipline and demonstrate potential to build an independent research program, as well as potential to educate and mentor students. The successful candidate will conduct original research, advise graduate students, teach undergraduate and graduate level courses, and perform service at the Division, College, and University levels. This will be a joint appointment between EEE and an appropriate Engineering School as tenure home.

Work in a team of Statistics-Aided Engineering experts within “Center of Excellence for Development Advanced Statistical Tools and Methods for Quality and Reliability Engineering”  to drive the application of advanced and state-of-the-art statistical methods, tools and usages in refining equipment design & development, and accelerating in the resolution of engineering and operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Statistics-Aided Engineering (SAE) expert liaison to engineering function and product development groups to implement complex design of experiments (DOE), statistical modeling, reliability, robust optimization, engineering statistics, and inventive problem-solving.
  • Contribute to the development and validation of statistical tools and usages for creating experimental designs, building predictive models, causal inference, and optimization of engineered systems.
  • Support execution of Applied Product Characterization methodology and tools in projects in the areas of product and process development, continuous improvement and high-value problems.
  • Provide consulting, training, and mentoring of statistical usages and linkages to different levels of roles within Applied Materials.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • M.Sc., but preferred PhD Degree in Statistics/Reliability with minor in Engineering/Science or related fields.
  • Expertise in creating and analyzing costumed design of experiments (DOEs), building complex predictive models, Bayesian causal inference, simulation techniques, reliability engineering, statistical/stochastic methods, and statistical software (use and scripting) including R, Stats package: BUGS/ JAGS, API development .
  • Strong facilitation, presentation, mentorship and training skills and the ability to build positive working relationships with different levels of roles in an organization.
  • Having an experience in deep machine learning/learning/neural network, statistical tools and linkages in the engineering and/or product development and/or queries in JMP, Python, or SQL are a plus.

Job openings with the Smart and Small Thermal Systems group (S2TS)

The Smart and Small Thermal Systems group (S2TS) within the Center for Environmental Energy Engineering in the mechanical engineering department, in coordination with its sponsors and collaborators, is looking for qualified senior level or graduate level students (graduate level is preferred) who may be interested in energy analytics/audit, simulation/modeling, as well as hands-on evaluation of commercial buildings energy consumption with the aim of reducing carbon emissions through energy efficiency, renewable energy, and electrification. Competitively paid hourly work or regular graduate student assistantship opportunities are available based on qualifications and matching interest/skills.  Expectations and tasks include the following:  

  1. Conduct hands-on and/or computer-driven energy analytics and building energy consumption analysis. Work with other team members in the group and prepare technical energy consumption analysis reports and presentations.
  2. Attend weekly meetings and report the progress made.
  3. Participate in presentation of the results and progress review meetings to the sponsor.

Qualifications and Compensation:

  • Graduate level students, or senior level standing (graduate level preferred).
  • Be available for 15 to 20 hrs per week. While semester-long opportunities will be considered, preference will be given to those interested in two semesters or longer work.
  • Have strong interest in energy efficiency/sustainable energy and a GPA of 3.25 or higher. Prior course work and/or experience highly desired. Limited training will be provided.  
  • Competitive hourly pay, commensurate with the experience and per the allowable university rates.
  • We are looking for students who are excited to get involved with this project, demonstrate good performance and enjoy developing competitive skills in this area.
