Two Faculty Opportunities at UC Davis

Aircraft Analysis and Design
The MAE department has a research emphasis on computational and experimental aero/fluid/thermal/structural dynamics, aeroacoustics, rotorcraft aerodynamics and control, spacecraft and robotics design, aircraft/spacecraft dynamics and control, and composite structures. MAE hosts two subsonic wind tunnel facilities. MAE also has long-standing strengths in hybrid-electric vehicles, autonomous/remotely-operated systems, and aerospace system design. The new position is expected to strengthen the Department’s existing efforts in the area of aircraft design and engineering with the opportunity to utilize the department’s unique wind tunnel facilities for pioneering research.

The successful candidate’s research interests in aircraft analysis and design applications may include – but are not limited to – aircraft analysis, performance, and design, flow control, applied aerodynamics, computational and experimental aerodynamics, aero-propulsive interaction, multidisciplinary aircraft optimization, commercial supersonics, electrified aircraft, Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL), or advanced air mobility (AAM). The candidate should to have a strong background in systems integration as applied to one or more of these areas, plus a strong background in traditional aircraft design principles.

The candidate must have completed a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field by the closure of the search period. The candidate is expected to develop a strong and active research program in their field of expertise and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in aerospace engineering, including but not limited to aircraft performance and design courses, and is also expected to develop new courses, as necessary.

Spaceflight Engineering
A new campus Center for Spaceflight Research was founded in 2019 to strengthen UC Davis’ space research efforts and to take advantage of burgeoning opportunities in spaceflight research. This new center provides opportunities for the successful candidate to play a key role in shaping research directions at UC Davis by adding depth to our current expertise while strategically addressing spaceflight engineering questions of tactical and strategic importance to our nation and the world.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field. Applications are encouraged from candidates with a strong background in any current or emerging area that contributes to Spaceflight Engineering. Any area relating to spaceflight/spacecraft/space mission/space exploration/space vehicles engineering will be considered, including technology related to either human or robotic missions in any aspect. For Both Positions
The appointment will be as an academic year (9-month) tenure-track Assistant Professor. Applicants must have been awarded a Ph.D. degree by the date of hire.

The current teaching expectation in the department is three courses per academic year. These courses will include material in the successful candidate’s area of expertise for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as core and elective undergraduate and graduate courses, and the development of new courses, as necessary. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to promote the professional development of graduate students in the M.S. and Ph.D. programs through high-quality mentoring that promotes diversity, equity and inclusion.

Most of tasks of this position will requires advanced data analytic skills, handling large amount of data like hourly / sub-hourly wind / solar generation and market prices and visualization of the key insights / knowledge obtained from the analysis

Qualifications:

  • Solid understanding of power market fundamentals and commodity market risks
  • Strong quantitative skills, paying attentions to details but not losing key messages
  • Statistical data analysis using one of the computation tools like R, MATLAB, or Python, visualize the highly complex concepts in a simple way
  • Programming skills C# or Visual Basic, database skills plus
  • Minimum 3 year industrial or research experiences in power and commodity markets

Resources for the Future (RFF) is seeking a full-time Research Analyst. Research Analysts are essential members of the RFF Research and Policy Engagement team. They are responsible for technical work that, under the direction of RFF Fellows, allows for the production of compelling and impactful research that aligns with RFF’s mission of improving environmental, energy and natural resource decisions through impartial economic research and policy engagement.

The successful applicant will further develop and utilize the Engineering, Economic, and Environmental Electricity Simulation Tool (E4ST). E4ST is a sophisticated power system simulation software package for predicting the effects of environmental policies, other electricity policies, new transmission lines, and more. It projects power system operation and generator construction and retirement in successive years. It uses an unusually detailed, realistic transmission system model. This position provides strong preparation for doctoral programs and for research and analytical jobs, such as in academia, industry, and consulting.   • Ability to work with and without supervision in a careful and conscientious manner.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in writing.

The successful candidates will be responsible for teaching innovative and project-based courses in the electrical and computer engineering curriculum. Applicants with expertise in all fundamental areas of electrical and computer engineering are invited to apply, however, our priority areas are as follows:

The Department greatly values experiential and project-based learning, integrating emerging topics and technologies into the curriculum, and provides an outstanding, state-of-the-art array of equipment, instrument, rapid prototyping, fabrication, and computational resources to support such activities. Our dedication to project-based learning is reflected in our curriculum, as all our courses have lab/project components. As a result, we seek individuals who share this dedication, have the skills and passion to develop innovative hands-on lab projects or other experiential learning activities using appropriate modern tools, and the ability to integrate such projects/activities into the course content.
The position also includes service responsibilities, such as helping with the department’s assessment activities. Therefore, any experience with assessment, pedagogy, and scholarship of engineering education would be very valuable (but not required). The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to be involved with student projects in the Rowan Engineering Clinic sequence, and optionally (if interested), contribute to the scholarly activities of our faculty and students.

The appointment is non-tenure track, but renewable with multi-year contracts, based on performance, departmental needs, and university and budgetary approvals. Applicants must have current, legal authorization to work in the United States. Candidates must havea minimum of M.S. degree in electrical, computer, or related engineering (Ph.D. is preferred – candidates in their last year of PhD studies are also welcome to apply),strong commitment to excellence in teaching, with a genuine interest in student-centered education and student mentoring, excellent communications skills with the ability and desire to work with a diverse group of multi-disciplinary student and faculty teams, sincere commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion

Ideal candidates are those who also share our dedication to project-based learning embrace interdisciplinary collaborations, have experience or interest in developing and implementing effective and efficient assessment protocols, have a proven record of, or exceptional potential for developing innovative pedagogical approaches, courses, labs, and projects for a modern ECE curriculum.

Successful candidates joining our family will teach core and elective ECE courses at the primarily undergraduate level, develop innovative curriculum components, including new courses in emerging areas, mentor and advise students as well as student clubs and organizations, help with Department’s assessment efforts, contribute to our service activities to further our collective mission and vision at the department, college, and university levels. Rowan University is experiencing tremendous growth at all levels.
